Our Trainers
Kara Hungerford -Head Trainer-
I have been handling and training dogs since 2002, when I acquired my first dog - Sakai, a Chinese Shar-pei.
Growing up near Kansas City, MO, I worked at a non-profit no kill animal shelter as an Admissions Counselor and Behavior Specialist, and at a Veterinary hospital as a Veterinarian assistant. These positions gave me experience in the world of rescue dogs as well as valuable insight into the treatment and care of injured dogs. I frequently fostered dogs in need, gave them the basic training needed to find them a good home and then helped place them - something I still do today. After spending several years as a veterinary assistant, and going to Veterinary Technician school, it became very clear that training was my true calling and passion. I began to train and compete in agility, disc dog and dock diving with my two dogs: Lucky, a Pit Bull mix, and Mickey, a Cattle Dog mix. This passion drew me to Austin - it was a location that would allow me to expand my knowledge and gain experience training dogs in all disciplines. While in Texas for 5 years I worked as a training instructor at a School for professional dog trainers, trained police and military patrol, narcotic detection and explosive dogs with a well known training facility, and featured many of my canines incommercials, movies, and TV Shows. We have worked productions with actors such as Adam Sandler, Dean Norris, and Gerry Cole. Currently, I train my 12 personal dogs in a variety of sports and compete throughout North America . Areas in which I have titled include: agility, obedience, rally, dock diving, disc dog, Schutzhund (IPO), and search and rescue. We also enjoy performing stunt dog shows and have been seen at the San Antonio Rodeo and Stock Show (K-9 kings) Weather day at the K(KC Disc dogs) Hills Science Diet at Swope Park, as well as many other pet fairs and festivals. As previously mentioned, rescue dogs is what sparked my interest and passion for dog training. I currently do independent rescue as well as work with several rescues and shelters including but not limited to All Border Collie Rescue, Border Collie Rescue and Rehab, Austin Sheltie Rescue, Austin Animal Center, and more. |
